IXcellerate Data Center

The data center infrastructure and its operation system comply with Level 3 (IBM) / Class F3 (BICSI) / Tier 3 (Uptime Institute) and higher reliability requirements, which is confirmed by international certificates not only in the “project” category, but also in the “implementation and operation” categories. This data center is one of 3-4 sites in Russia that have completed full certification. Certificates were issued by IBM (Level 3, equivalent of Tier III Uptime Institute). An excellent 99.999% reliability level, exceeding the Tier III rating of 99.98% set by the Uptime Institute.

Data center characteristics

  • The total useful space of server rooms is 12,000 sq. m. 6000 sq. m. m. in the existing building; in the first and second extensions (not built) — 6000 sq. m.
  • The maximum number of standard racks — up to 6000, of which in the existing building — 3000, in the first and second extensions (not built) — 3000.
  • The total useful space of server rooms — up to 6000 sq. m;
  • Design capacity 14 MW;
  • Estimated power per rack — up to 7 kW;
  • Estimated effectiveness at full capacity (PUE) — no more than 1.5.

Power supply

Electrical power for the racks is supplied from three independent sources according to a first special category of reliability. External power supply of the data center: from two different city distribution stations, via two cables along different routes. On the site, the cables are brought to the transformer substation, each to a separate transformer. City level redundancy is executed through ATS. External power supply redundancy within the site: the typical configuration UPS + DGU.

UPS based on on-line UPS Liebert Hipulse E with a rating of 400 kVA (for the 1st phase), and APC MGE Galaxy 7000 with a rating of 300 kVA (for the 2nd phase). Battery life: 17 minutes.

Reliable Power Supply System based on DGU SDMO 550 kVA. DGU starts within 0.5-30 seconds. Operating time with a supply of fuel on site — 72 hours. Each rack of the computer room is connected via 2 separate cables to 2 different PDUs at different ends of the hall. Racks are serviced without application interruption.

Redundancy of all elements of the power supply system, including UPS, DGU, distribution cabinets and cables, is arranged in 2N configuration.

Standard power per rack is 7kW, upgrade is easily done by changing circuit breakers in distribution cabinets. Smart PDUs provide a range of useful metrics for each individual rack for billing purposes and predictive analysis of possible power supply issues.

Cooling

The Moscow One data center guarantees temperature and humidity maintenance within the range established in accordance with the ASHRAE recommendations: the minimum temperature is 18 °C, the maximum temperature is 27 °C; relative humidity is 30 to 60% at a dew point temperature of 5.5°C to 15°C.

The main cooling system is powered by Emerson HPC-M chillers with a rating of 400 kW with a free cooling mode and Emerson PCW PH091 precision air conditioners (fan coil units). Air-cooled Emerson CRAC freon air conditioners are used to cool the machine room of phase 1. Redundancy of the cooling system of each room: N + 1 configuration.

Racks are installed in a way to form classic cold and hot aisles, with cold air intake from under the raised floor and blowing into the hot aisle. Perforated raised floor tiles with variable air volume supplied into a cold aisle allow easy temperature reduction without any cooling system upgrades.

Each air conditioner is connected by two independent pipes to 2 main refrigerant circuits. Any air conditioner may be disconnected from the line for repair or upgrade without stopping the others.

The computer rooms are designed for heat transfer up to 7 kW in standard mode. If necessary, additional means of increasing heat dissipation are used: opening the blinds of raised floor tiles, isolating cold aisles and sealing empty spaces in racks, using in-row air conditioners, and in-rack cooling.

Security

The data center has the following security features:

  • guarded gates and protection of the grounds by a security alarm system and security video surveillance;
  • access control point and a turngate at the entrance to the data center, where documents are checked and passes are issued;
  • access control and management system (ACS), using magnetic ID-cards, as well as biometric identification devices both at the entrance to the data center and computer rooms;
  • security video surveillance system that records all movements inside the data center, without blind zones, with sufficient resolution and a long data storage period for further analysis;
  • additional measures to protect customer equipment by means of private security cages and video surveillance cameras.

Fire safety

The IXcellerate Moscow One data center has a three-level fire detection and extinguishing system, which consists of the following components:

  • Very early smoke detection apparatus Vesda LaserPlus VLP-002.
  • Regular fire alarm and warning system.
  • Mobile gas fire suppression system.
  • Automatic fire extinguishing system HI-FOG.

Vesda, very early fire detection system, using spectral analysis, detects the very first signs of smoke even before a visible fire, and allows data center personnel to eliminate the possibility of a fire by turning off fire potential equipment or manually extinguishing, before the main fire extinguishing system is activated.

Marioff's HI-FOG automatic water mist fire extinguishing system is one of the best practices as of today compared to gas fire extinguishing and other methods according to the National Fire Protection Association NFPA 750.

The system eliminates fire by dispersing micro-droplets of water mist. At the same time, oxygen is displaced simultaneously with the removal of heat from the combustion zone which is more efficient than in other methods.

This extinguishing method has significant advantages over gas fire extinguishing systems: extinguishing takes place in a specific section of about 16 sq.m., not in the entire room. The room is not filled completely with gas harmful to people. During the installation operation, data center personnel can continue to rescue equipment and contain the fire. Once triggered, the system is immediately ready for next use as no refilling is required.

HI-FOG complies with international fire safety standards. The technical solution was confirmed by fire tests by PozhTest (FGBU VNIIPO EMERCOM of Russia).

Compliance with standards and certifications

The Moscow One data center has many certificates, two of which are especially worth mentioning:

IBM Resilience Level 3 Certificate: Design, Construction and Management dated March 25, 2014 (similar to Tier 3+).

The certificate confirms the compliance of the data center parameters at the stage of design, implementation and operation with the level of international requirements not lower than Tier 3 of the US Telecommunications Industry Association Standard for Data Centers ANSI/EIA/TIA-942.

The standard confirms that the data center provides a level of availability of customer services of at least 99.999% when performing any scheduled preventive work related to the repair and reconstruction of infrastructure.

PCI DSS certificate dated April 28, 2014

The standard confirms the level of services security for clients located in the data center, which is necessary for Russian and international companies that process and store personal data, in particular about card holders (banks, processing centers, service providers, e-commerce systems, etc.).
